Teens can help out with children and get part-time jobs to bring in the extra money to. My Sims 3 baby challenge is here if you're interested!
Back in 2000, I was working as a youth ministry intern in Colorado and living in the basement of a church family that was kind enough to give me a rent-free home. Still, it was among one of the most lonely times of my life, as I was suddenly separated from all of my college friends and wasn’t exactly making a lot of new ones. During that year, I turned to computer games in my free time, thanks to my brand-new desktop. And one of the games that really helped pass the time was The Sims.Oh, The Sims!
It’s so hard to express how exciting and revelatory this game was when it first released. I had remembered playing Sim City 2000 back in high school, but this was far more up my alley. Creating a house and watching people live in it?
It sounded mundane but ended up being very engrossing. I spent months playing the core game, but for some reason never did buy into the hundreds of expansion packs. Sims 2 and 3 did get on my play list, although they never quite grabbed me as hard as the original (and I’ve yet to fiddle with Sims 4).In a powerful fit of nostalgia, I searched out a copy of The Sims a month ago. EA doesn’t make the original available online for some reason, and GOG doesn’t have it, so I had to actually buy a physical copy (my original box having vanished into the nether some years ago).
It took an additional patch and some research to get it to run on Windows 10, but finally I was able to get this 17-year-old title up and running for some retro gaming! The very first Sims neighborhood was very small and basic, especially compared to later editions (or even Sims 1 expansions). I always play a Sims game the same every time — I bulldoze all of the houses, evict all of the premade characters, and start from scratch. For my first home, I tend to buy the cheapest lot so that I would have the most money available for building.Of course, another tradition is that the first character you make in a Sims game is ALWAYS yourself.
It’s kind of shocking how few options there are in the base copy of The Sims — just an array of heads and some default outfits. No body types, no customizing more specific elements, nothing. You did get to program your sim’s personality, in which I always set the neat level to the highest for at least one member of the household.
This way, you have a neurotic cleaner who was always straightening up — a free maid, in other words.Oh man, remember when Comic Sans was popular and acceptable enough that you could use it in your video games without irony? The Sims 1 remembers!Obviously, looking back at a 17-year-old game is going to be a let-down in the graphics department. The Sims isn’t atrocious, but it’s certainly very dated, especially with its 3D models (the sprites that made up the objects and house come off better as more detailed and less jagged). I was also reminded that this game had a very different soundtrack than subsequent Sims games, more of a generic 1950s Americana commerical and less of the goofy and relaxing melodies that started to come into the series with The Sims 2.I learned the hard way that it’s never a good thing to go big with your starter home. That way lies going broke, fast, and leaving your Sims in a hollow mansion. So I always began with a simple three-room abode: main living room, bedroom, and bathroom.
I’m impressed how easy and accessible the building and decorating tools are even today (and boy does it come back fast!).My finished starter home with all of the essentials. You wanted to make sure that your sims had enough to do and all of the basics, including places to sleep and poop in peace.Unfortunately, the game wasn’t working quite right enough for me to do a full playthrough (it wouldn’t save, wouldn’t show my cursor half the time, disabled the sound, and had other issues). So I’m going to have to content myself with this brief glimpse. Was it playing dollhouse for grownups? But there was something soothing and empowering about creating something and seeing life flourish in it rather than just destroying and fighting everything. The Sims probably sparked my ongoing fascination with housing in MMOs, and now it’s making me want to pick up a copy of Sims 4.What were your favorite memories from the original Sims? My memory is gnomes. Lots and lots of wood gnomes.
You could earn money crafting them at a woodworking bench, which gave one of my adult sims plenty to do in his free time. After leveling the skill enough, you didn’t even need a regular job anymore, which meant no more pressure of making sure you were up and off to work at the right times. And you could afford the most expensive house and possessionsI also recall that you didn’t want to get too good of a bed.
I think there was one that would recharge your sim in about 4 hours. The only problem was that their energy would drain at the same rate, so they would end up on a 22 hour day, instead of 24.I never used that “Neat” trick- it would have been helpful. I think I made my sins less neat, thinking that they wouldn’t care about living in a dirty house then. Rosebud rosebud rosebud rosebudSo many memories!I was working in the local game store (Electronics Boutique) at the time Sims launched and it was our assistant manager who introduced me to The Sims.
He said something along the lines of, “This game just came out and I think you’ll love it!” Then he walked me over to the shelf (used to have a big ole PC section in those days), pulled the box down for me, and introduced me to the concept of The Sims.I bought it that day, and have been a Sims fan ever since. It was the most amazing thing that you could download content made by users or make your own. You also used to be able to export something like a family album into html format if you wanted to upload it to a website somewhere. I didn’t start with the Sims until Sims 2 was out and already on it’s 3rd expansion I think.
I bought the base game and 1st expansion right off then worked my way up until I was buying the expansions and stuff packs as they were released and had the whole collection by the end. I still have it, though now it’s via the Ultimate Edition on Origin that EA gave those who owned any of the Sims 2 packs when they retired the title a few years back. I spent lots of time in Sims 2, including getting into creating custom content for awhile.I subsequently played Sims 3, but have yet to actually play through all the expansions even though I own them all. Now and then I load it up and play a bit, but rarely have much time for it these days amidst all the other games I play currently. I also have 4, and have played it some, but haven’t ever gotten into it as much as I did 2 and 3. Now and then I think about hunting down a copy of 1, but not sure it would really be worth the hassle at this point.
If you don't know what the Sims Legacy Challenge is, you're missing out on a huge part of playing the game! Typically, the legacy challenge is a 10-generation challenge in which you strive to raise 10 generations of Sims. The challenge starts with the creation of a founder, who lives on an empty plot of land with a very small amount of money. In this challenge, you are restricted from using cheats. This makes it much more difficult, as we Simmers (fans of The Sims series) are so accustomed to them.If you have already mastered this challenge (and bravo if you have) there are many interesting variations that you should try out! Variations on the Legacy ChallengeThe following challenges are creative variations of the original 10-Generation Legacy Challenge.
Try them all for some added difficulty and hours of entertainment.I'm Surrounded by IdiotsThis challenge is extremely funny. You must create a family, but you are only allowed to control one Sim. It is really interesting to see what your Sims get up to without your control!
I love this one because I get to see the personalities of my Sims.Differences in the Family TreeThis is a very long that has many rules and goals for each generation. There are many different paths to take, and it's great for those who are persistent.A Round RobinIn this challenge, you and play each one for about a week. A really good twist on this one is to play with another person, alternating weeks. If you're writing a story, two different authors, ideas and perspectives can make it very interesting!A Genetic Legacy (Prettacy/Uglacy)In, you aim to have completely different genetics when you reach the end.
In a Prettacy, you start with a hideous Sim and aim for a beautiful one after ten generations. In an Uglacy, you do the opposite!A RainbowcyThis is not much different than an ordinary legacy. In a, however, each generation has a specific colour that is used to decorate the house, the Sims' clothing, etc. I know this is something many Sims players avoid simply because it is really quite hard and takes many grueling hours in front of the screen. That said, it is a rewarding experience knowing that your Sims are living in a house that you built from scratch. Even if all you can manage at first is a simple box house, just look for inspiration and building tips online and you'll soon be building grand mansions of your own!
I often scour YouTube for inspiration myself. Rocketdmg11, ChrillSims3 and Curtis Paradis are three of my favourite designers on YouTube. There are limitless options when it comes to designing and furnishing a house with all the content that EA provides. This is especially so with the use of Custom Content. You can see more info on that at the bottom of the article. What could be better than being able to control your own life, cover to cover? Creating a Simself is something every player should try. Whether you recreate your present life or make a completely new one is up to you!Personally, I think it's really fun to create a Simself in the neighbourhood, but then leave them up to their own devices while playing with another family.
It's interesting (and occasionally horrifying) to see what your Simself gets up to on their own!Hopefully, they won't make too many mistakes. This probably works best if you have Twallan's Story Progression installed in your game. Otherwise, your Simself won't get up to too much.
You can see more info on that at the bottom of the article. Also, if you have the Pets Expansion Pack, you can even make your own little cat, dog or horse! Imagine being able to cuddle your pet in real life and in The Sims! Whether you choose to document your legacy or a story, it's a great idea to get a blog started. The game's blogging community is very active, and sharing your stories is a great way to brush up on your writing skills and make a few friends.
Tell the world the story of your Sims and show everyone just how creative you can be!A narrative supported by beautiful screenshots can make for a very immersive experience. There are many places to start a blog, with the most popular being Wordpress, Blogger and Live Journal. The Sims 3 website is also a great place to start.is one of my favorite stories.

A lot of people are under the impression that the Legacy Challenge is one of the only challenges made for this game, but in actuality, there are thousands to choose from! Here are some I recommend:The Mythical CreaturesIn this challenge, each of the ten generations is a different type of with different rules to follow, e.g., Generation 1 is the vampire generation and Sims are not allowed to leave the house during the daytime or they die. It is a very interesting and complicated challenge with many rules and goals.ApocalypseThis challenge begins in a in which your Sims have to complete certain tasks throughout the generations to unlock 'restrictions' that have been placed on them.CinderellaIn this challenge, lives with her step-mother and step-sisters. She has to cook and clean up after them all on top of going to school and living in a shed behind the house. You live out Cinderella's life and help her find her Prince Charming! Here are things that some players use to enhance the quality of their game. You don't need to use all of them, but adding a couple can make a big difference in your experience. If you do install mods or Custom Content, you will need to keep track of all of them and perform routine checks as you install new updates and expansions.
Though not everything out there is completely safe, most Simmers don't have problems with the websites below. If there are problems, they will usually result in game glitches, which don't pose any real threat to your computer.
ModsA mod (modification) adds content or changes gameplay mechanics. Installing a mod can enhance features that are already great, or increase replayability with a complete overhaul.Twallan's Story ProgressionThis is an absolute if you are installing mods for your game. Normally, your neighbours simply stand around in the houses and do nothing while you are playing. But with this story progression, they finally do things! They have enemies, develop love interests, get married and have children all on their own. The best part is that you can receive notifications regarding all the exciting things that happen with other families.
If you find that annoying, you can always turn it off. Custom Content (CC)CC includes things like brand new clothes, hair and furniture. The pre-set choices in the game are pretty limited, especially if you don't have many expansion packs or buy from EA's online store.CC only occasionally requires payment. But even if you have to pay, it is well worth it.
Many of these content creators are truly talented and share great work that makes your game look much nicer. Be careful, though! A lot of CC is buggy and conflicts with the game, so you have to be careful where you download from.
Here are a couple of resources that I have downloaded from safely:Mod the Simsis a huge online community where people upload their creations of mods, custom content and poses. There is a lot to choose from. If you are writing a Sims 3 story, poses and CC are extremely helpful in portraying characters and scenes.
But before you download anything, be sure to check that the content is up to date. If it has not been updated recently, it will probably not be compatible with the latest expansion packs and patches.Anubis Under the Sundoes amazing retextures of hair and clothing. This is one of the most high-quality and safe resources to download from. It also has content for The Sims 4.Lotushas some of the most beautiful hair designs I have ever seen, and I have downloaded many things from here. Not once have I had a problem with my game!Ace Creatorsare four very talented Sims 3 CC makers that make great hair and clothing.
Their pieces are stunning! Nice, these are all great things. I like to do a lot of c.c. Nraas has some really great stuff.
And so does lostacount. I'll use mods that make the game realistic. Such as lost accounts hospital mod that has the abortion/insemination clinic. And superscripts that allows miscarriages and child support. From Nraas I thin NoFridgeShopping and Story Progression are must haves.
And for those who want a more adult game loverslab has some neat tricks. Some day I'm going to learn to create my own mods. Seeing everything that has been created for the challenge of it or as a request for a story is really cool.

There is so much out there, but you do have to be careful not to overload your pc. You'd have to have a custom beast to handle everything. XP I'm going to get myself one of those as well. @anonymous: I had the same issue for some time. The game would crash and my pc would restart. The problem may occur if you have the Intel Express Chipset and not some upgraded video card like NVIDIA. I didn't purchase this graphic card, though.
I downloaded a software. Installed it and since then, my game never crashed. You can download the driver software here (downloadcenter.intel.com / DetailDesc.aspx?lang=eng&DwnldID = 20598). The file name is Win7Vista151718.exe. Hope this helps.
I used to spend many hours on Sims 3. Sadly the files got corrupted one time whilst updating and I couldn't be bother to build all my stuff back up again.I mostly used to concentrate on 'Building a House' and 'Trying out all careers' from your list. My most ingenious house that I created had a room for every occasion, and even an underground museum that had egyptian and all sorts of artifacts. It was only accessible through a secret doorway which I created using a cheat code that enabled me to code characteristics into random objects. I could even use dev items like secret switches that you would find in tombs.Nice lens by the way:) If you have time, try pop over my side of the court. My recent lens highlights the best browser based flash games you can play on your PC. And I'm not talking about simple pong games either.
World of Warcraft equivalent visuals games you can play right in your browser:) I promise you'll be surprised.
